Ever since I did the NYC Triathlon in 2017, I have wanted to also compete in the Chicago Triathlon. I love Chicago. It’s got great food, great music, and just an amazing atmosphere. I must have been there a half dozen times and every time I go, I fall in love all over again!
Why Is Chicago Triathlon on My Bucket List?
This year, I decided to follow my dream and cross the Chicago Triathlon off my bucket list. I’m flying into town on Friday and will be there until Monday morning, during the weekend of August 27.
The Swim
There are several things that appeal to me. First off, the swim is in Lake Michigan. I had stayed at the Hilton Chicago in the past and watched as swimmers would go out early and get in their morning workout. It just looked amazing to me.
The Ride
Then, riding around the city of Chicago with no cars in sight also intrigued me. The course has some technical turns but is flat and makes for an enjoyable ride.
The course will start at the scenic lakefront, tunneling underneath the bustling Loop, through the heart of the financial district, then cruising down the city’s most exclusive freeway with no cars!
The Run
As for the run, it begins at the grass reserve just south of Randolph. You will run past the Buckingham Fountain, where the path becomes asphalt. Then we run on the lakefront path and continue running south. Sprint competitors cross Waldron Dr., where they turn around and head north, keeping left of oncoming runners on the same path.
The turnaround for international runners will be approximately a half-mile south of McCormick Place. Both groups will pass the Shedd Aquarium, continuing west under the Lake Shore Drive underpass and up the sidewalk to Columbus Dr. All runners will then make a right and continue north on Columbus to the finish line just ahead.
