Interesting Conversation with the Massage Therapist
I get massages. I feel like I have to with all the training I do. If you’re reading this and train more than me, then you know it’s true. Your body needs it for recovery.
Anyway, I was getting a massage and I told the therapist that I was running a half marathon the next day. “Oh, ok,” she said, “I won’t give you a deep tissue because you will crash in the middle of your event. Instead, I’ll massage and stretch you out.”
I didn’t say anything. I just laid there like a piece of lox.
She started to talk and ask me questions. All I kept thinking was, please a little quiet time over here? But that wasn’t happening. She told me she was a runner too and her sister was a triathlete. I told her I was training for Miami Man in the middle of the month and she said, “you don’t look like a typical triathlete.”
“What do you mean?” I asked. I wasn’t offended.
“Well, you know, not to stereotype but triathletes are generally large women with muscles,” she said. “They are also an angry bunch.”
I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t even think of one person I knew who would fit that bill.
“They seem so mad. I guess they get their aggressions out on the sport,” she said. “You don’t seem angry. You really don’t seem like them.”
“Well, maybe that’s the reason why I don’t podium and they do,” I said teasingly.
She stopped talking and continued to stretch me out.
