If you know me, you know that nearly eight years ago, my beautiful sister, Lori Weiss, passed away from a ruptured brain aneurysm at age 60. According to The Bee Foundation for Aneurysm Awareness, every 18 minutes an aneurysm ruptures. These can be fatal, in the case of my sister.
This past December, I, too, had an aneurysm. Thankfully, it did not rupture, but it was in a bad location in the back of my head. It was also misshaped. Therefore, after seeing three different surgeons, they all recommended that I get a stent and/or a coil to stop the aneurysm in its tracks.
Aneurysms run in families. My grandfather died of an aneurysm at age 75.
My surgeon, Dr. Christopher Kellner, at Mt Sinai Neurosurgery, was great. After reviewing my angiogram, he performed the surgery. Recently, I had another angiogram and found that the aneurysm shrank.
Lori saved my life
I want to honor her memory by holding this run/walk. Lori wasn’t an athlete, but she loved life, and especially loved her family She was always the “life of the party.” She was my best friend and the mother of my nieces. Lori was also a nurse, and giving back was something she felt was necessary.
After this happened to me, I looked on line and found The Bee Foundation. They were extremely helpful. They offer support groups for those who have had an aneurysm, offer research grants to surgeons, and they provide education to the community.
The Lori Weiss Memorial Run/Walk
On Saturday, September 14 at 8 am, I will be holding the Lori Weiss Memorial Run/Walk at Heckscher Park on Long Island. If you can’t attend because you don’t live locally, don’t fret. We do have a virtual option.
All attendees will receive a beautiful medal, tee shirt and swag. We will have light refreshments there including pretzels by Auntie Anne.
