Racing Heart by Kate Mihevc Edwards Review

I broke my toe. It hadn’t been diagnosed when I starting reading Racing Heart — A Runner’s Journey of Love, Loss and Perseverance by Kate Mihevc Edwards but right after I finished the book, I went to Urgent Care and found out it was officially broken. Feeling sorry for myself, as I was reading the book, I realized it could have been much worse. Things can always be worse no matter how bad they may seem at the moment.

About Racing Heart

Racing Heart is a book about the author’s life. You learn about her life growing up in a dysfunctional broken family. You also learn about her marriage to her supportive husband and their young son.

Things were going great for Edwards. She was running races, triathlons and was even gearing up for a half Ironman. She qualified for the Boston Marathon, ran it and ran several other marathons. However, she started feeling strange. When she went to the doctors, they told her she was fine and sent her on her way.

ARVC

Turns out she had ARVC, a rare genetic heart disease. ARVC stands for arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. If she continued to race, she could make matters worse with her health. So she faced a lot of conflict – she wanted to continue racing but couldn’t. She wanted to run every day and was told to keep her heart rate no more than 150.

Redefining her life

After going for major surgery, she needed to find a new place in her life. She found yoga, a psychologist and meditation and learned to redefine her life.

I sat there on the couch with my foot elevated as I read Racing Heart, Kate Miheve Edwards’ story and I cried. It resonated with me. It resonated because although there are set backs, if you have the right mindset you can continue to move forward. That’s what Kate Edwards did and that’s what I’ll do too.

Thanks to Smith Publicity and Dr. Kate Miheve Edwards for sharing this story with me.

If you’re looking for a book that will inspire you, Racing Heart is the one for you. It’s a quick read (I read it in a few hours as I sat on the couch) and a good read. The author is an excellent writer and reveals a lot about herself.
