Are you scared of being attacked by a shark?
We are all somewhat afraid. Recently, Sharkbanz—a wearable shark deterrent, sent me a product for review. I didn’t try it in the ocean, but I did try it out in the bay. The whole time, I kept thinking that the magnetic force would attract sharks, but thankfully, it did not.
What is Sharkbanz?
Sharkbanz is a wristband designed to repel sharks using magnetic technology. The concept is simple yet brilliant: sharks rely on electrical receptors in their snouts to navigate and hunt. Sharkbanz disrupts these receptors with a powerful magnetic field, causing sharks to turn away without harming them or the environment. This means you can focus on your swim without worrying about unexpected visitors.
First Impressions
When I first received my Sharkbanz, I was impressed by its sleek design. It’s lightweight and comfortable enough to wear for extended periods, essential for long training sessions. The band is adjustable, ensuring a secure fit whether you wear it on your wrist or ankle. (I actually cut it down for my wrist. Thankfully, it still fit on my ankle.)
Ease of Use
One of the things I appreciate most about the Sharkbanz is its simplicity. There’s no need for batteries, charging, or complicated setups—just strap it on, and you’re good to go. This made integrating it into my routine effortless. Plus, it’s waterproof and durable, designed to withstand the rigors of open-water swimming.
Performance in the Water
I wore the Sharkbanz for the first time during a swim, and I must say, it was reassuring. While I didn’t encounter any sharks (thankfully!), just knowing I had an extra layer of protection gave me a confidence boost. The band stayed securely in place throughout my swim, and I barely noticed it was there—a testament to its ergonomic design.
Additional Features
Sharkbanz also markets itself as a tool for peace of mind beyond triathlon training. Whether you’re surfing, snorkeling, or simply enjoying a day at the beach, wearing Sharkbanz can offer reassurance against the unlikely event of a shark encounter.
Environmental Impact
Another aspect worth noting is Sharkbanz’s commitment to marine conservation. By providing a non-invasive method of shark deterrence, it supports safer human-shark interactions without harming these vital creatures of the ocean. This aligns well with my values as an athlete striving to minimize my environmental footprint.
Price Point
At first glance, the price of Sharkbanz might seem steep. However, when you consider the potential cost of medical bills from a shark bite—not to mention the peace of mind it offers—the investment becomes more justifiable. After all, our safety during training and competition is priceless.
Final Thoughts
If you’re an open-water swimmer, surfer, or anyone who spends significant time in the ocean, Sharkbanz is worth considering. Its innovative, eco-friendly approach to shark deterrence makes it a valuable addition to any aquatic enthusiast’s gear. The price is $128 and well worth it for peace of mind.
Stay tuned for more updates on my journey with Sharkbanz, and happy swimming!
